From Preface: The collection of jewellery and ornaments presented here by Timothy Garrard has been brought together over a long period extending from the 1920s to the present day. Our most recent acquisitions arrived shortly before this catalog was printed. Most of the objects assembled during the past fifty years is "unique in its size and scope". Most of the objects in the collection date to the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This, as Dr. Garrard explains, is because very little ancient West African gold survives. Although the late date of these objects is the reality, some interesting historical hypotheses are proposed in this first extensive exhibition.
